Crooked Creek Art League's Annual Juried Show is held every March at the Park in Chapin. This year's Best in Show went to Ann Sweeney for her piece "Somewhere in Sudan." Ann was inspired by a young woman she photographed while on a mission trip in Khartoum. The juror's Shannon Smith Hughes and Jennifer Smith Rogers had these comments about the painting: "We chose Ann Sweeney's oil painting, "Somewhere in Sudan," for Best in Show. We were captivated by her soulful eyes and her inner strength and beauty. It is evident that Sweeney could feel her spirit. Her choice of painting her close-up in a large format gives a powerful impact on the viewer. She masterfully handled the soft filtered light and vibrant colors within a well-designed composition."
Mother and Daughter magic happened this evening at the Award's Reception with Sonya taking 1st Place Amateur for her piece "Four Feet."
As if that wasn't enough for the duo, Sonya's painting "David & Mattie" earned the City Art Award which was open to all categories.
And finally at the end of the evening, Sonya's painting of her mother "Beach Solace" was voted People's Choice.
It was a hat trick that will never be repeated but it was a fun and almost magical evening.
